The guided search model, developed by Jeremy Wolfe and colleagues beginning in 1989, extends and modifies feature integration theory to account for the observation that conjunction searches are often more efficient than FIT's serial search prediction. The key innovation is that pre-attentive feature processing does not just detect features — it generates an activation map that guides the deployment of focal attention, directing it preferentially to likely target locations.
The Activation Map
In the guided search model, each item in a display receives an activation level determined by two sources: bottom-up salience (how different the item is from its neighbors, reflecting stimulus-driven factors) and top-down guidance (how well the item's features match the target description, reflecting the observer's knowledge of what they are looking for). These activations are summed into an overall activation map, and focal attention visits items in order of decreasing activation.

How Guidance Improves Conjunction Search
Consider searching for a red vertical bar among red horizontal bars and green vertical bars. Although neither "red" nor "vertical" alone uniquely identifies the target, items matching the target color (red) and items matching the target orientation (vertical) receive top-down activation boosts. The target, being the only item matching on both dimensions, receives the highest combined activation and is likely to be among the first items inspected. This explains why conjunction searches are often faster than exhaustive serial search would predict.
The model has gone through several major revisions. Guided Search 2.0 (1994) formalized the architecture and added noise to the activation map. Guided Search 4.0 (2007) addressed a broader range of search phenomena and incorporated ideas about quitting rules (when to stop searching and declare the target absent). Guided Search 6 (2021) expanded to address functional visual field, eye movements, and real-world scene search. Each version has maintained the core principle of guided attention while addressing a wider range of empirical phenomena.
Guiding Features
Not all visual features provide effective top-down guidance. Wolfe identified a set of "guiding attributes" — features that can be used to steer attention — including color, orientation, size, motion, and (to a lesser extent) shape, luminance polarity, and depth. Other potentially distinguishing features (such as line intersection type or lighting direction) provide little or no guidance. This distinction between guiding and non-guiding attributes is important for predicting search efficiency in real-world tasks.
The Quitting Problem
A particularly challenging aspect of visual search is the target-absent decision: how does the observer decide the target is not present? In a strictly serial model, they must inspect every item. In guided search, the observer samples items in order of activation and quits when the remaining activation falls below a threshold — but setting this threshold involves a speed-accuracy trade-off, and errors in the quitting decision account for many search failures in real-world tasks.
Practical Impact
The guided search model has influenced applied research in medical image perception, airport security screening, and human-computer interaction by providing a framework for understanding why certain search tasks are hard and how display design can facilitate search. By manipulating factors that affect guidance (target-distractor similarity, distractor homogeneity, and the number of guiding dimensions), designers can optimize displays for search efficiency.
